International Day of Yoga

The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originates from India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi originally suggested the date of 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, as it’s the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga was originally introduced into the West by an Indian sage call Swami Vivekanadad, who demonstrated Yoga at a World fair in Chicago in the 1890s. This generating lots of interest and laid the grounds for the welcoming of many other Yogis and Swamis from India in the years to follow.
